Somerset County Early Head Start
Somerset County Early Head Start

Free for pregnant women and families with children birth to age 3.
Somerset County Early Head Start believes that school readiness begins prenatally and during the first days, weeks and months of life. Early loving, nurturing relationships that include meeting the child’s physical needs and assuring the child’s health and safety are essential to healthy brain development. When babies learn that they can trust and feel love and develop a bond with their parent, learning is stimulated.

The role of EHS is to provide a consistent, respectful and supportive relationship with parents through family-centered home visits so that parents support their child’s healthy development, understand typical developmental stages, establish a secure and trusting relationship with their child and provide a stimulating, developmentally-appropriate environment for their child by interacting with them and allowing them to play and explore. EHS will also provide resources to assist families in handling crises, obtaining needed resources and meeting their own goals.

Outreach Project
Outreach Project

The Employment and Training Department is starting a new Community Service Project/Outreach Project. We will be making Fresh Start boxes. Fresh Start boxes will be given to those in need of some positivity. When a participant is going through a rough spot and are making positive changes to work towards the life they want, they will be given one of these boxes. For this project to be a success we need help.

We are asking for assistance with donations of the following items:

  • Shoe boxes

  • Kids books

  • Toiletries

  • Kids toys

  • Scarves

  • Jewelry

  • Arts and Crafts Items

  • Photo Albums/Picture Frames

  • Misc. Items that could brighten someones day

If interested in assisting with this please contact Danielle Wismer-Bowers.

Thank you!

2015 Outstanding Advocacy Award

This award recognizes an individual or organization for exceptional advocacy and leadership efforts on behalf of anti-poverty and community development programs.  Advocacy efforts should directly impact policy, regulation, or legislative agendas that complement Community Action's mission and goals.

Lisa Troha is this year's Outstanding Advocacy Award Recipient.

Ms. Troha has been the Directory of Community Services for the Community Action Partnership for Somerset County since 2007.  She has been an exceptional advocate for those in poverty, and she has instituted and managed countless programs to assist the clients served.  During her tenure, she has brought new housing programs, weatherization services, employment and training programs, clothing programs, and volunteer opportunities to the Community Action Partnership for Somerset County.

In addition to the 2015 Outstanding Advocacy Award, Lisa has been recognized and received citations from Pennsylvania local and state representatives for her advocacy of low-income Pennsylvanians.
